The short film Detached is about a young woman named Faye who recently lost her girlfriend, Alex. Struggling to process the loss, Faye begins to hallucinate Alex. The film explores how grief and the power of the mind can deceive you, leading you to live in a false reality.
My role
I worked as the Director of Photography (DoP) for this film, handling the visual style and look. Before filming, I worked closely with the director to make sure our ideas for the film matched. Once we agreed on a vision, I researched how to bring it to life within our limited budget.
With a clear understanding of the equipment and team we had, I created a storyboard and shot list to plan every scene. Due to our small budget and crew, I also took on the role of cameraman during the shoot. It was a tough two-day filming schedule, but we finished on time.
After filming, the director, editor, and I reviewed the first cut of the film and provided feedback to improve it. This teamwork ensured the final product stayed true to our original vision.

More about the film
Detached was made during the Sickhouse Film Camp, where people with different levels of experience worked together to create a short film in just two weeks. It was a fun and collaborative experience, with everyone learning from each other as they worked. The highlight was the premiere of Detached during the opening of the Koorts Film Festival, which was an exciting moment for the team after all their hard work.
